Meet Matt Flenniken, Junior Golf Coach in San Jose, CA

Matt Flenniken was inducted into the PGA Teachers Hall of Fame in 2021. He is also certified as a Sport Psychology Practitioner and belongs to the PGA as an Ambassador Member. He has a background in developmental psychology, which shapes his clear, understandable teaching style.

What happens at the very first session?

It is largely a chance to get acquainted. Coaches typically spend time learning about your child's interests and experience, then look at how they hold the club, stand and swing. Safety and etiquette often come up early, such as where to stand while others hit. Parents can ask what the coach noticed and what to practice before the next session.

How can lessons help my child get ready for tournaments?

Lessons are a natural place to develop a routine that holds up when nerves appear, plan how to play each hole and pick sensible targets. After an event, looking back at decisions rather than only the score keeps attention on what a player can control. Parents can support this by keeping expectations light and treating each event as a chance to learn.
