About
Meet Devan Bonebrake, Junior Golf Coach in Carlsbad, CA
Devan Bonebrake worked with tour players including Greg Norman, Keegan Bradley and Lexi Thompson as Jim McLean's assistant. The Jim McLean Junior Academy in Dallas/Fort Worth offered him a Master Instructor position in 2011. He spent the following 5 years there helping develop junior golfers. Golf Digest named him Best Young Teacher in America for 2016/2017.
Devan teaches a 3-step system learned from Jim McLean: know what the player is doing now, what they want to do instead, and the path between the two. Most of his lessons combine high-speed video with TrackMan data, and he uses the video to show what causes the numbers. He prescribes drills so a player can isolate a change and own it.
He played college golf for College of the Desert, then transferred to San Diego State. He teaches everyone from high-performance juniors to weekend golfers and newcomers to the game. Devan teaches at Southern California Golf Academy in Carlsbad, CA.

What should my child work on before playing tournaments?
Competitive play asks for more than good technique. Areas worth working on include managing emotions, sticking to a simple plan and making smart choices when a shot goes wrong. It also helps to understand scoring, pace of play and how to handle a ruling. Reviewing each event afterward, including what went well, turns the experience into useful practice.
What is the difference between an academy and individual lessons?
Individual lessons offer close attention and quick adjustments for your golfer, while an academy adds routine, friendly competition and more time hitting shots. Neither is right for everyone. Think about your child's personality, how much structure they enjoy and what they want from golf. A coach can help you decide which setting fits, and the answer may change over time.
