About

Meet Doug Hammer, Junior Golf Coach in Scottsdale, AZ

Doug Hammer won the Southwest PGA Youth Player Development Award in 2019 and has taken seven GRAA Top 50 awards for helping the game grow. He became a PGA member in 2001 and is a Certified PGA Professional in Player Development. Doug has taught everyone from first-timers to professionals and top-ranked amateurs.

His teaching starts from the view that no swing is perfect for everyone. In lessons he uses TrackMan, FlightScope and V1 video. Reviewers say he is quick to spot what needs fixing in a swing or setup.

In 2002 he became Director of Instruction at Eagle Ridge Resort and Spa in Galena, IL. There he began working with Tim Mahoney, a Top 100 teacher and Director of Education at Troon Golf. He has served as Director of Instruction at the David Duval Golf Academy in Japan. He came to Troon North Golf Club in December 2007.

What levels does Doug teach?

Doug lists beginner, intermediate, competitive and advanced players as the levels taught.

Doug lists these areas of expertise: putting, short game and full swing. Doug uses FlightScope, a launch monitor, SAM PuttLab, TrackMan, V1 video and video analysis.

What should my child expect at their first lesson?

Mostly introductions and a relaxed look at the basics. Coaches usually chat with a new player about any golf they have tried, then check fundamentals such as posture, aim and how the club is held. Many start near the green with putting or short chips, where early success builds confidence.

How is progress measured in junior golf?

Progress in junior golf shows up in more ways than score. Coaches often track skills such as contact, distance control and putting from set spots, and compare swing video over time. For newer players, confidence, focus and enjoyment count too. Scores rarely move in a straight line, so looking at trends across many rounds gives a fairer picture than any round on its own.
