How can parents tell when a child is ready to start?

Readiness is more about behavior than size or skill. Signs to watch for include enjoying swinging a club or rolling a ball at a target, waiting for a turn, and staying with a simple task without drifting off. If most of these are present, talking with a coach about your child can help you judge the timing. If not, waiting a little longer does no harm.

What should my child expect at their first lesson?

Mostly introductions and a relaxed look at the basics. Coaches usually chat with a new player about any golf they have tried, then check fundamentals such as posture, aim and how the club is held. Many start near the green with putting or short chips, where early success builds confidence.
