Craig White teaches at Oak Ridge Country Club in Oak Ridge, TN.

An opening lesson is mostly about getting to know the player. Coaches often ask what golf a child has played, watch some swings and check basics like grip, stance and balance. From there, they may pick something simple to work on. Ending with a short, playful challenge is a common way to close on a positive note.

Beginners do not need a full set. Junior clubs that match your child's height and strength make learning easier, and a wedge, an iron, a wood and a putter cover the basics. Used clubs work well because kids outgrow them quickly. Add a glove if your child prefers wearing it, plus balls, tees and shoes with good grip.
