Very little to begin with. A few junior clubs sized to your child's height, including a putter, plus some balls and tees are enough. Add comfortable athletic shoes, a hat and water. Avoid cut-down adult clubs, which are usually too heavy and stiff for small players. It is worth asking a coach for advice before buying anything.

Progress in junior golf shows up in more ways than score. Coaches often track skills such as contact, distance control and putting from set spots, and compare swing video over time. For newer players, confidence, focus and enjoyment count too. Scores rarely move in a straight line, so looking at trends across many rounds gives a fairer picture than any round on its own.
