Competing in your first American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) tournament is an exciting milestone. These events represent a step up in competition level and can open doors to college recruiting opportunities. Here's how to prepare for success.

Before the Tournament

Physical Preparation

Two Weeks Out:

  • Play at least two practice rounds on similar course conditions
  • Increase practice time gradually
  • Focus on course management scenarios
  • Work on your pre-shot routine

One Week Out:

  • Review your swing basics with your coach
  • Practice specific shots you'll need (punch shots, flop shots, etc.)
  • Get adequate rest—no cramming practice sessions

Day Before:

  • Light practice only (30-45 minutes)
  • Walk the course if possible
  • Organize your bag and equipment
  • Prepare your clothing for all rounds

Mental Preparation

  • Visualize playing each hole successfully
  • Review your goals and process focuses
  • Practice your breathing exercises
  • Prepare for adversity—have a plan for bad shots

Logistics

  • Confirm tee times and check-in requirements
  • Plan travel and accommodations
  • Check weather forecasts
  • Pack extra supplies (gloves, balls, snacks, sunscreen)

During the Tournament

First Tee Nerves

It's normal to feel nervous. Use these strategies:

  • Arrive early to establish your routine
  • Complete a full warm-up
  • Take deep breaths before your first shot
  • Focus on your target, not the outcome

Round Management

  • Play one shot at a time
  • Stick to your game plan
  • Manage your energy (stay hydrated, eat regularly)
  • Keep score mentally—don't obsess over the numbers

Between Rounds

  • Review what worked well
  • Identify one or two areas to focus on
  • Rest and recover properly
  • Avoid over-analysis

After the Tournament

Evaluation

  • Write down what you learned
  • Identify patterns in your play
  • Note any mental game breakthroughs or challenges
  • Discuss with your coach

Moving Forward

Use every tournament as a learning experience. The goal of your first AJGA events isn't necessarily to win—it's to gain experience competing at a higher level and to identify areas for continued development.
